Remember Yahoo Instant Messenger?

Do you ever miss life before social media?

Sometimes I catch myself reminiscing about my earlier motherhood days, especially when I just had my oldest two boys.

I became a mom nearly sixteen years ago. We lived in Oklahoma City at the time. I was not quite twenty years old.

Although I had wonderful coworkers at the bank and we had a church family of 2,000+ members, many who were fellow college classmates, I didn’t really have any friends.

When my oldest son was just four months old, we moved back to Texas. The following year, our second son was born.

Adulthood was in full swing, and I was lonelier than ever.

I was quietly struggling with postpartum depression during this time, too.

We eventually bought our first house in our hometown. It felt good to be near family.

Around this time, my younger sister (who I love and missed dearly) had transitioned back into civilian life after her service in the U.S. Navy. She then had two children of her own, as well.

One day, something amazing happened…

We got the internet in our home!

Game changer

My sister and I began chatting on Yahoo Instant Messenger while our kids took naps. I looked forward to it everyday!

We eventually got these fancy things called webcams so we could see each other, too.

We talked about everything!

  • how our mornings went

  • parenting struggles

  • relationship advice

  • politics

  • book reviews

  • recipes

  • tv shows and movies

  • her college nursing classes

  • my growing interest in photography

  • Jesus

We even exercised together while she was in Nebraska and I was in Texas!

So much in our lives and the world has changed since then!

I share all this to say, connecting with my sister, sharing this motherhood journey with someone who gets it, made all the difference in my life!

With the social media evolution of the internet, everyone abandoned AOL and Yahoo.

I now realize that’s what I want the future of The Heartfelt Motherhood Project to be, a return to…
